Serratiopeptidase

Serratiopeptidase (serrapeptase) is a proteolytic enzyme that has fibrinolytic, anti-edemic, and anti-inflammatory activity. Serratiopeptidase is derived from bacteria belonging to the genus Serratia. This enzyme is absorbed through the intestines and transported directly into the bloodstream. Serratiopeptidase binds to alpha 2- macroglobulin in the blood in the ratio of 1:1, which helps to mask its antigenicity but retains its enzymatic activity and is slowly transferred to site of inflammation.
Serratiopeptidase has been used successfully for almost 40 years in Japan and Europe for pain and inflammation due to arthritis, trauma, surgery, sinusitis, bronchitis, carpal tunnel and painful swelling of the breasts. It acts upon inflammation by thinning the fluids in the body that collect around injured areas and increases fluid drainage. Serratiopeptidase also enhances tissue repair and reduces pain. Pain is also reduced by this enzyme’s ability to block amines. It also has the unique ability to dissolve the dead and damaged tissue that is a by-product of the healing response without harming living tissue.
Serratiopeptidase is a viable alternative to salicylates, ibuprofen and the more potent NSAIDs. Unlike these drugs, Serratiopeptidase is a naturally occurring, physiological agent with no inhibitory effects on prostaglandins and is devoid of gastrointestinal side effects.

Serratiopeptidase has been shown to be effective in transferring various antibiotic such as Penicillin G, Ampicillin, Gentamycin and Cefatoxime to the site of infection. It could significantly enhance the effectiveness of antibiotics against biofilm and can inhibit biofilm formation.
